Boko Haram: Police release teenagers arrested by soldiers
Armed Forces, Boko Haram, Latest Politics Saturday, February 25th, 2012Two teenagers arrested by soldiers last Thursday for allegedly driving their Mercedes Benz car into the walls of a primary school near the complex of the Defence Industries Corporations of Nigeria, Kaduna, have been released.
The teenagers, Lukman Mohammed, and Kabiru AbdulRahman, were released following entreaties made to the police and military authorities by their parents.
Soldiers had earlier cordoned off the DICON premises and its environs following threats of attack by the men of the militant Islamic sect, the Boko Haram.
The teenagers were on their way back from the Gwamnan Awan General Hospital Kakuri, where one of them had gone for dental check-up when they rammed their car into the wall of the Local Government Education Authority Primary School in Kurmin Gwari, Kaduna South Local Government Area.
The duo, who were mistaken for Boko Haram suicide bombers, were promptly arrested by the soldiers keeping watch on the premises of DICON.
The teenagers were later handed over to the police at the state Criminal Investigation Department headquarters, popularly called ‘Metro’ for detention.
Police and military authorities had earlier denied detaining the duo.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Aminu Lawan, had said, “I contacted the Metro authorities about the detention of the youngsters but they said they were not aware of the case.”
The detained teenagers’ father, Mr. AbdulRasheed Imam, however told our correspondent on Thursday that his sons were released to him by the military and police authorities after he repaired the school walls they broke with their car.
“We have secured their release. We were asked to repair the wall that they broke, which we did. Then we were asked to bring letter of authority from the military but the officer to issue the note was away.
“He finally arrived last Tuesday and after giving us the note, we went to the Metro to present it and the boys were released,” Imam said on the phone.
