Osun: Anxiety over N’Assembly tickets

Confusion on Wednesday trailed the primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Osun State House of Assembly aspirants just as anxiety has mounted over today’s primaries to select candidates for House of Representatives and Senate contests.

Addressing a news conference in Osogbo, the state capital, on Wednesday, a retired Superintendent of Customs, Chief Sogo Agboola, debunked speculations that he had withdrawn from the Ife-Ijesa senatorial race.

Rising from a meeting, the Ijesa Elders’ Caucus, on Tuesday, announced the adoption of a retired Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Chief Francis Fadahunsi, as the candidate of the ijesa people.

A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, announced the adoption of Fadahunsi by the caucus but Agboola said the decision to adopt Fadahunsi was contrary to the provision of the Electoral Act.

Babatope had announced that Fadahunsi was picked by the elders‘ caucus ahead of former Director General, National Emergency Management Agency, Chief Remi Olowu; a chieftain of the party, Chief Dosu Fatokun; and Agboola.

Also, the incumbent Senator representing Osun-Central senatorial district, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Chief Simeon Oduoye, on Wednesday, expressed the confidence that he would defeat a former Governor of the state, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, in the contest for the senatorial ticket.

Speaking through his media aide, Mr Lekan Olawoyin, in Osogbo, Oduoye urged the leadership of the party to ensure a free and fair primary for the senatorial ticket.

With the latest development, Fadahunsi and Agboola are poised to face the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Chief Iyiola Omisore, who is eyeing a third term as a senator.
