Independence Day bomber: Kinsmen urge IG to probe death

Emma Amaize
WARRI- THE people of Kalafiogbene community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State,  the country-home of  Francis Osuwo, alias General Gbokos, the alleged October 1, 2010 Independence Day bomber, who  died in detention at Kuje Prisons, Abuja, Thursday, called on the Inspector General of Police to probe the death of their son, who they claimed was innocent of the crime.

They also described the reported smuggling of his corpse out of Kuje Prisons as an abomination. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, claimed, last  Sunday, 24 hours after Gbokos’ death that his remains were smuggled out of Kuje Prisons to an unknown destination.

A prominent leader of the community, Mr. Yusuf Eregbene told Vanguard in Warri, “Our son is innocent, he was arrested and is facing trial in connection with the October 1, 2010 Independence Day bombings in Abuja, we don’t support criminality and we believed that he would have come out victorious after the trial”.

“So, killing Gbokos in Kuje Prisons is uncalled for. The community is calling on the Inspector General of Police to probe the circumstances that lead to Osuwo’s death. His remains should be kept in a safe place.

His words, “it is an abomination for the Federal Government to kill our prominent son and smuggle away his corpse. To avoid trouble, the police should probe the circumstances that led to his death without delay and handover his remains to the Kalafiogbene people for proper burial because we our son is innocent of the Abuja bomb case”.

Vanguard reliably that Osuwo was one of the ex-militants that accepted amnesty and was married to Mrs. Philomena Osuwo. He had four children and a family that were looking up to him for survival before his arrest and eventual death.

It was gathered that he relocated to Warri after he accepted amnesty and started trading to fend for his family.

“He is the only eye of the Osuwo family. Before the October 1, 2010 bomb blasts in Abuja, his father, Chief Frank Osuwo was already dead, but his mother, Mrs. Edegbne-Ere Osuwo is still alive”, a villager told Vanguard.
