Police probe death of three suspected cable vandals in Enugu
Enugu, Nigerian Police, State News Thursday, March 8th, 2012By Tony Edike
ENUGU—THE Enugu State Police Command has commenced investigations into the mysterious death of three young men suspected to be cable vandals inside a NITEL underground pit within the Ogbete Main Market in Enugu, the state capital.
Some traders at the market reportedly discovered the decomposing corpses of the three men inside the pit Wednesday and immediately alerted the nearby Central Police Station.
Policemen from the division who rushed to the scene were said to have informed officials of the state Ministry of Health who later removed the corpses even as hundreds of traders and passersby who were shocked by the strange discovery gathered within the area to witness the evacuation of the lifeless bodies.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said yesterday that the police command had commenced full scale investigations into the death of the three persons whose identities are yet to be established and who were trapped inside a NITEL pit by Ogbete market junction.
Amaraizu said: ‘’Sources had it that the three young men who were discovered inside the NITEL pit were trapped. They were alleged to have gone to vandalize the NITEL cable inside the pit where they were trapped before security operatives of the command were alerted on 07/03/12 at about 1530.”
However, some traders who saw the decomposing bodies of the deceased persons said they may have suffocated inside the pit several hours before they were discovered.
Although the Police suspected that the victims could be cable vandals, some traders feared that the young men may have been pushed into the pit by unidentified persons apparently to murder them, as they wondered how three persons could enter a pit at the same time to vandalize NITEL cables.
Three persons had died in a similar manner inside a six-feet deep toilet soak-away pit while carrying out repair work at Garki area of Enugu in May 2010.
