Northern Christians disagree over association
Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Headlines, Kaduna, State News Monday, April 9th, 2012KADUNA—The Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has questioned the formation of the Northern States’ CAN, describing it as not only unconstitutional but illegal.
Kaduna CAN said the association’s constitution made provision for the formation of six geo-political structures of CAN, and not based on the old regions, as the Northern CAN depicted.
At a briefing in Kaduna, yesterday, the state Chairman of the association, Reverend Samuel Kujiyat, also wondered why the Northern CAN had been sabotaging its activities over the years even as he threatened that his chapter would soon send Northern CAN out of its premises.
He recalled how Northern CAN allegedly collaborated with the national body to make his election look illegal, saying that this was one of the antics of the Northern body against his administration to bring the state CAN down.
However, reacting to the allegation through telephone, the Public Relations Officer, PRO, Northern States CAN, Sunday Oibe, said, “Northern States CAN had been in existence since 1964 and cannot be therefore, illegal.’’
Oibe said: “The allegation is laughable; it is also laughable for a son to declare his father and mother illegal. Kaduna State CAN is a son to Northern CAN. Northern CAN is not an illegal body, we have the certificates, and it is a constitutional body.
”Elected officers in the 19 Northern states came together to have this forum. So, you cannot declare them illegal.”
