THE President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ayo Oritsejafor, has rejected the view of the American government expressed by the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Mr. Johnnie Carson, that “the threat from Boko Haram grows as Nigeria’s standard of living declines.”

In a statement by the Special Assistant, Media and Public Affairs to CAN’s president, Kenny Ashaka, said: “We reject the reason being peddled by the American government and some Boko Haram apologists in the North that poverty and injustice are the spark for the sect’s members action.”

The cleric stressed that the type of arms and ammunition being used by the sect could only be purchased by those with a heavy financial power.

According to him, a fair comparison of any other region with the North shows that the section of the North referred to by Carson has been the greatest beneficiary of Nigeria.

Oritsejafor noted that the North had been in leadership for the greater part of Nigeria’s history and its greatest annoyance seemed to be its displacement from this position.

The CAN president on behalf of the Christians in the country condoled with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the Kaduna, Kano, Borno and Yobe attacks during the Easter celebrations.
