Protest in Abeokuta as doctor slaps nurse at FMC

By DAUD OLATUNJI

ABEOKUTA – Hundreds of patients  at  Federal Medical Centre {FMC},Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital   were subjected to untold hardship   following  the reported superiority tussle  between nurses and doctors  which  has grounded  medical services in the hospital last four days.
Vanguard’s investigations revealed  that, the two medical  bodies locked horns  since last week when a doctor identified Dr. Soyile reportedly slapped (a nurse) one Mrs Adesina who is an  Assistant Nursing during an argument.
A source within the hospital told Vanguard that, the  crisis started when  Soyile  was acussed of dereliction of duty   and was reported to the  Chief Nursing Officer of the  hospital (name withheld) who reportedly scolded him.
The gesture, findings showed, did not go down well with the embattled doctor who reportedly frowned at the effrontery of the Chief Nursing Officer and allegedly  insulted the Chief  Nursing Officer which provoked  the nurses in the hospital.
The source further said that attempt made by one of the nurses to avenge  what was described as an assault on the  Head of Nursing Service, resulted in  an alleged slap  from the doctor.
It was learnt that a complaint was  lodged  to  the hospital management, which reportedly did not yield any fruit, prompting the nurses to  embark on strike.
Vanguard learnt that,  the alleged reluctance of the management of the hospital  to take appropriate action, coupled with insult meted out to the Chief Nursing Officer, infuriated  members of  Nursing Association of the hospital  who  staged a protest before they   embarked on protest against the action.
As at the time of filing this report, which is the third day, the situation still remained unresolved . And when our correspondent visited the hospital, the protesting nurses were yet to resume work, insisting that not  until the situation is given the deserved attention, none of the nurses would resume for work.
The  visit to the hospital also  showed that the strike embarked upon by nurses, some patients who were brought to the hospital were abandoned while those that were already in the hospital  were  asked to go home  as there were no nurses to attend to them .
Confirming the strike action, the Public Relations Officer of the Hospital, Segun Orisajo told Vanguard on phone that, the management was making efforts to end the strike.
He did not disclose the reason for the meeting, but, assured that, the crisis would soon be resolved.
