UI shut for 2 weeks

THE University of Ibadan (UI) has officially been closed down for two weeks, with the purpose of finding a lasting solution to the power problems facing the institution, as well as curbing the recent students’ unrest, which has halted the academic progression of the institution in the last three days.

The statement was made available in a press release by the Director of Public Communications of the institution, Mr Olatunji Oladejo.

It further stated that the university authorities had resorted to closing down the school temporarily, with a view to addressing the perennial problem of power supply in the institution.

“The Senate, at its special meeting on Tues-day, to review the current situation on campus, resolved that all students should proceed on a two-week break with immediate effect. Consequently, all students must vacate halls of residence,” it read.

While commenting on the students’ claim that the authorities of the insti-tution remained unconcer-ned to their plights, Mr Oladejo said the statement was not true, adding that the stakeholders of the institution had constantly sought for means to resolve the power problem, with the view to providing a condu-cive environment for learning.
