BUK bombing: JTF kills suspect, arrests another
Boko Haram, Latest Politics Tuesday, May 1st, 2012The Joint Security Task Force, yesterday in Kano, confirmed that it has killed one of the suspects in the Sunday’s attacks on Christian worshippers at the Bayero University in Kano. The security operatives equally announced the arrest of his compatriot, who had earlier escaped in the course of the exchange of fire between the sect and security operatives.
Residents of Babbugage Quarters in Sharada (Phase 111), where the raid occurred, as well as those resident in surrounding settlements were woken to the deafening blasts of bomb explosions, as well as sounds of gunfire arising from the confrontation between the sect and the soldiers.
Head of the Joint Security Task Force in the state, Brigadier General Ilyasu Abba while briefing reporters on the three-hour operation, linked the two suspects to the sect members that attacked the worshipers at the Bayero University , Kano on Sunday.
He explained that the sect members assigned to take on the worshippers at the university campus saw the arena as a soft area where they could easily operate.
He added that motorbike recovered from the raided building was the same bike deployed, a few days back, to kill one of his soldiers resident in the neighborhood, even as he confirmed that the building equally doubled as a bomb factory.
Three women were rescued from the building at the end of the operation. They are Habiba Mohammed, a pregnant woman from Maiduguri, Borno State, who incidentally was handcuffed during the briefing.
Others are Fatima Ibrahim Mohammed, a Cameroonian mother with a two-weeks-old baby and one Lami Idris, a maid to the suspects, who was engaged about two weeks ago.
Items recovered from the affected building include bank slips, laptops, one AK47, uniforms, batteries, 35 knives, 6 high caliber remote controlled IEDs, 35 low caliber remote controlled IEDs, 458 rounds of live ammunition , car keys and timers among others.
Brigadier General Abba, who is the Brigade Commander of 3rd Brigade of the Nigeria Army, Kano , admitted that a war on terrorists is a difficult fight.
He expressed the hope that soon, the ugly incident would be over, adding that with enough public enlightenment and support, they would overcome.
