Azazi`s statement on Boko Haram diversionary – Falana
Boko Haram, Latest Politics Monday, May 7th, 2012Lagos Lawyer and activists, Mr. Femi Falana, has said that it is very dangerous for the National Security Adviser, General Owoeye Azazi (rtd) to ascribe the spate of bombings in the country to disgruntled politicians in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
He described the statement as diversionary.
General Azazi, who spoke at the recent South-South Economic Summit held in Delta State, was alleged to have said the PDP`s brand of politics, particularly, the way it picked its candidates for elections was partly responsible for the Boko Haram insurgency.
But Falana told The Nation that it is “extremely dangerous and unacceptable” to hold disgruntled politicians liable for the terrorist attacks in the country, saying the information at the disposal of the security agents showed that the Boko Haram sect which has link with the Al-Qaeda terror group has been responsible for the attacks in the country.
“Nigerians should therefore reject in its entirety, the diversionary and reductionist explanation by the security adviser that terrorism is borne out of frustration of disgruntled politicians. It is a very dangerous approach,” he stressed.
The activists identified corruption and lack of political will on the part of government as the reasons why “these criminals and their sponsors” are never brought to book.
He said the government has the responsibility to guarantee the lives, security and property of the people.
“We must insist that the government has a duty to guarantee lives and security in the country. But beyond verbal assurance, beyond presidential assurance, there must be concrete measures put in place to stop the growing wave of mindless killings of innocent people in our country. As at today, the government and security forces are overwhelmed by the Boko Haram menace and there can be no excuse for this.
“The primary purpose of government, according to the Nigerian constitution is to guarantee the welfare and the security of the people. Once the government cannot discharge that civic responsibility, it is no longer fit to be there, “Falana stated.
