Lagos gives 48-hour ultimatum to commercial vehicle operators in Ikorodu
Lagos, State News Friday, June 15th, 2012IN its determination to further ensure safety of lives and free flow of traffic, the Lagos State government has directed that with effect from Friday, June 15, 2012, all commercial bus drivers operating within Ikorodu and its environs, especially those loading and discharging passengers indiscriminately at the town’s roundabout, should desist from such an illegal act and move to the designated motor park at Sabo or face the wrath of the law.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Babatunde Edu gave the order during a meeting jointly organised by the agency and the Lagos State task force on environmental sanitation and other special offences for the two recognised unions in the state – the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) at the task force office, Alausa, Ikeja.
He said that, commercial bus operators were fond of flouting traffic rules and regulations, as they always drive in direction prohibited by the law, turning every nook and cranny of Ikorodu into motor parks, rather than use the dedicated parks allocated to them.
Mr Edu said that the directive became necessary in order to curb the excesses of commercial drivers and street urchins, who had narrowed the road to suit their undesirable acts, thereby causing traffic gridlock and posing a serious security threat to the people. He warned that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would not hesitate to impound any vehicle found to have contravened the directive.
