20 professors vie for Unilorin vice chancellorship
Headlines Tuesday, June 26th, 2012AT least 20 candidates have signified their interest to become the next vice chancellor of University of Ilorin (Unilorin), after the expiration of five-year tenure of Professor Ishaq Oloyede on Octo-ber 16, 2012.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that most of the candidates rushed to submit their letters of intent to beat Monday’s deadline stipulated in the newspaper advertise-ment published on May 14 for the position.
It was also gathered that 20 professors with-in the university had submitted their application letters to the office of the registrar and signed a register opened for the exercise at noon on Monday, contrary to earlier reports that only four candidates beat the deadline.
Sources said some of those who had submit-ted their letters of intent included Professors Timothy Opoola, Albert Olayemi, Musbau Akanji and Joshua Obalaye, all from the Faculty of Science.
Professor Hassan Salihu from the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences also beat the deadline, just like Pro-fessor R. A. Akamidu from the Faculty of Arts; Professor Luke Ayorinde from Faculty of Agricul-ture and Professors J.A. Olorunmaiye and B.F. Sule from the Faculty of Engineering also beat the deadline.
Also on the list is Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, while investigations also revealed that the only external candidate is Professor Ignatus Madu from the Univer-sity of Nigeria, Nsukka.
By law, the univer-sity’s governing council is now expected to shortlist three candi-dates and sent their names to President Goodluck Jonathan, who will, in turn, approve a candidate as the vice chancellor of the univer-sity till October 16, 2019.
