Kano: Police Kill 17 Gunmen, Arrest 3 Others

Kano State Police Command has disclosed that it has killed 17 of the suspected gunmen, who attacked the police post at Dala division with explosives and gun fire on Tuesday night.

State Commissioner of Police Mr. Ibrahim Idris said three of the suspected gunmen were arrested, while the command diffused 14 improvised explosive devices planted in different locations by the gunmen.

He said: “The extremists, who numbered about 30 attacked the police on duty with assault rifles and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), while the policemen gallantly repelled the attacks”.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday at the command’s conference room, the Commissioner lamented that the command lost one police officer while another suffered gunshot wounds.

According to the Commissioner, the Dala Police Station was not the only place attacked on Tuesday night.

“The extremists also attacked Jakara Police Barracks, Goron Dutse and Panshekara Police Divisions and 52 Squadron Mobile Police Unit, Challawa with explosives and assault rifles.

“They also planted a bomb at Junior Secondary School Sabuwar in Doka Ungogo Local Government.”

The commissioner explained that the command recovered five assault rifles, 220 live ammunition, five vehicles, three motorcycles and the sum of N100, 000 including a large quantity of drugs and syringes.

Idris pointed out that the extremists also attempted to attack Goron Dutse Prison, but the policemen on duty successfully repelled the onslaught and ensured no damage was done to the prison.

The CP said that the situation was now under control, while the police were still searching for some of the assailants who might have sustained gunshot wounds.

The commissioner expressed appreciation to the people of Kano State for the cooperation the police have been receiving from them and urged the general public to continue to cooperate with it in the area of providing information on suspicious persons within the communities and to remain vigilant to apprehend terrorists who may be lurking around to drop IEDs.
