Group threatens to expose corrupt varsity lecturers

AN NGO – Nigerian Democratic Awareness Forum (NIDAF) – has blamed the prevailing spate of armed robbery and prostitution, especially among university students, on the greed and corruption among lecturers in institutions of higher learning.

The group threatened to expose and confront lecturers who engage in the illicit activity of demanding money for marks from students in the higher institutions in Rivers State.

The National Publicity Secretary of NIDAF, Comrade Frank Onwusonye, gave the warning at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, in a chat with newsmen shortly after his return from a

seminar titled ‘Role of NGOs in Students Orientation’, held in Germany.

He said lecturers in Nigerian higher institutions contribute to students’ laziness in academic activities, thereby contributing to the increasing rate of robbery and prostitution among students.

He declared: “Eighty-five per cent of misconducts by students, including robbery, prostitution, exam malpractice and the rest of them, are caused by campus environmental influence on students, which some lectures initiated.

“Only few lectures today are encouraging student to read; the rest of them are only interested in what they can get from students. They want to make quick money

from poor students and those who cannot afford the ‘brown envelop’ go for desperate means on how to pass exam or upgrade their results while the ladies get the money from men and give to lectures and sometimes complement the envelop with their body.”

He further revealed that the NIDAF receives several reports of illegal extortion from students by dubious lectures, adding that the group is working on such reports with other agencies to ensure that lecturers who

indulge in such illegal acts do not go scot-free.

“Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) has the highest number of complaints and some of these reports are about three particular lecturers. These lectures tell

students before the exam date to start collating their money (illegal fees) instead of asking them to prepare for their exams, and each grade has a price for it. I promise you that they will all end in jail,” he vowed.
