Police move to guard Ogun churches, mosques

Ogun State Police Command is to step up security around churches and mosques in Ogun State.

State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Okoye Ikemefuna, who said this while addressing stakeholders in Abeokuta, on Saturday, explained that the action was taken to secure places of worship against any form of attack.

Okoye said all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers had been directed to mobilise their men for the purpose on Fridays and Sundays.

He said, “We are doing all within the power to make sure that we reduce crime to its barest minimum and to also make everyone sleep with their two eyes closed. The command will deploy more men in some strategic places that I will not like to mention, all in a bid to ensure adequate security of lives and properties.”

Okoye advised the groups that attended the meeting not to hesitate to volunteer useful information that would enhance the performance of the police in the state, assuring that the identity of anyone who volunteered information to the police, would not be revealed.

He stressed that the security of lives and property was everyone’s business and underscored the need for collaboration between all the groups and individuals in the state.

The police boss also assured that the command was already taking measures to check the influx of arms and ammunition from the neighbouring countries sharing borders with the state.

He therefore assured the people of the state of adequate security of lives and property.

Okoye advised the groups that attended the meeting not to hesitate to volunteer useful information that would enhance the performance of the police in the state.

Also, an Islamic cleric, Alhaji Tajudeen Adeosun, has urged members of National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state to always embrace dialogue in resolving differences and issues among themselves.

Adeosun said on Sunday while delivering Ramadan lecture to members of the union in Abeokuta that Islam and other religions frowned upon violence.

The cleric stressed that issues and conflict could be resolved through dialogue rather than engaging in violence.

He said, “I want to strongly appeal to you to make the best of the season by using the teachings of Islam to resolve whatever difference you may have among your selves. It is important to imbibe the teachings of your religions and live by it and also be change agent that will ensure peace and tranquility.

“As much as possible avoid backbiting, bitterness, hatred among other vises but ensure justice and fairness as Allah has thought us.”
