Letter: High cost of education in Nigeria

THROUGHOUT the world, education plays a crucial role in all sectors of a nation’s economy. Education is very essential for nurturing an individual’s mind.

However, the high cost of education across the country today has negated the United Nation’s perception of education for all as a right, rich or poor. Exhorbitant school fees do not allow many eitizens to go further in their academic pursuit. The lingering high cost of education in Nigeria is becoming unbearable as it is only privileged Nigerians that can give qualitative education to their children.

In the old days, education was meant for the rich and poor citizens. Our leaders today came out of families that were terribly poor.

However, Western education made many of them what they are today in the society.

Any form of discrimination, was not in existence then in our education sector.

Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, on interview published in the Nigerian Tribune on 14 July, 2012, made us realise that, education was available and affordable in the old days.

According to him, he started working in Kaduna immediately he came back from the one-year mandatory service programme. He said that he worked for six months and resigned. Imagine! At the age of 22 years he established his own business and became self-employed.
