…As JTF kills another Boko Haram commander

No fewer than 10 people died in Borno at theweekend following multiple attacks by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram sect. Security sources hinted that at Mbwa, a small community in Chibok Local Government, South of Borno, seven people including three Christian worshippers were killed yesterday in separate attacks.

The three Christian worshippers were reportedly shot dead while returning from church yesterday. Though, details of the attacks were sketchy as at press time, a top military source told Daily Sun that the attack claimed about 10 lives. “All I can say now is that about five people died in the various attack at Mbwa. I can’t tell you anything now,” the source claimed. Other persons were also said to be seriously injured.

In another incident at Gamboru, a border community in Gamboru-Ngala Local Government in the early hours of yesterday, gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram attacked the Divisional Police Station in the town, killing two police officers, while residents fled into the bush for safety. Gamboru/Ngala is a border town with Chad Republic and 150 kilometres North of Maiduguri, the state capital. Residents said the gunmen came in a vehicle and some motorcycles and launched offensive again the police station with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

The yesterday attack at Gamboru came barely 24 hours after explosions rocked the troubled city of Maiduguri and Gwange, one of the flash points of the Boko Haram sect again became the epi-centre. Sources said one person might have died in the blast while many others injured. Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force in Maiduguri said it killed a suspected commander of the Boko Haram sect, one Abdukareem Ibrahim yesterday.

A statement from the Spokesman of the task force, Sagir Musa, a Lieutenant Colonel, stated that the suspected commander was killed in a gun dwell with the sect members yesterday morning. Part of the statement reads: “In a follow up operations conducted by the JTF to arrest some key commanders of the Boko Haram in Bulabulin area of Maiduguri on November 29, where the JTF lost a personnel with one other injured, the Joint Task Force with members of the Department of State Security and the Nigeria Police Force, Dog Section, in a combined operations yesterday, launched a special raid operation along Damboa – Biu Road to capture one of the major commanders, Abdulkareem Ibrahim, top on its wanted list. “During the operations and in the ensuring fire fight, Abdulkareem Ibrahim and two of his sub Commanders were killed and an AK47 rifle with other arms and ammunition were recovered. Abdulkareem was a notorious terrorist who has been responsible for the recent spates of assassinations and bomb attacks in Maiduguri.

He is one of the top “Amirs” (Commander) recently declared in the bounty list released by the JTF to members of the public.” The JTF will continue to appreciate all information that will lead to more arrest of the sect commanders declared in the bounty as well as other information that will help in its conduct of operations to eliminate terrorist activities in the state.
