Obasanjo expresses optimism over Ghana polls

Former  President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who is leading a 250-member ECOWAS observer mission to Ghana’s general elections scheduled has expressed optimism that the elections will be successful.

This, he said, was because of the satisfactory preparations and the nation’s proven tradition and reputation for democracy.

This was contained in a statement from the ECOWAS Commission, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

“We are here as witnesses to what promises to be peaceful, transparent,  credible, free and fair elections,” Obasanjo was quoted as saying on arrival in Accra adding that given Ghana’s reputable history, the December presidential and legislative polls would not be an exception.

According to the statement, Obasanjo commended Ghanaians  and all the stakeholders, including the  electoral commission, and  political parties for signing up to a peaceful and violence-free electoral process, towards strengthening and deepening the democratic culture in the country and the region.

“The ECOWAS Observation team, led by Chief Obasanjo and comprising representatives of various segments of the West African society, is in Ghana  within the context of the region’s instrument for provision of support to  member States holding elections.wp_posts
