Court orders IG to investigate DPO

THE Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to investigate the activities of the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in Ogidi Anambra State over allegation of kidnapping and robbery levelled against a community leader and businessman, Chief Okechukwu Nwafor Agu.
The police had, in a paid advertisement, declared Agu wanted over alleged kidnapping activities, a development that made him to sue the IGP, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, the DPO in Ogidi and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
Agu also accused the DPO of fueling the killings and destruction of property in Abor Akuzor in Umusinu village, Nkpor and Ogidi in Idemili local government area of the state which had been enmeshed in a protracted land tussle.
In his ruling on the matter, the presiding Judge, Justice G. O. Kolawole said that in view of the seriousness of the allegation against the DPO, the attention of the IGP should be drawn to the matter to enable him stem the tide of killing and destruction in the area.
He also restrained the DPO from arresting and detaining Agu without reasonable or probable cause to avoid infringing on his fundamental human right as enshrined in Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
