In Abu Dhabi, Nigerian Woman Jailed for internet scam
Africa & World Politics, Headlines Thursday, January 17th, 2013The Criminal Court of Abu Dhabi says it has jailed a Nigerian woman
for one and a half years for social network scam. The court also said
the woman (name not disclosed) also faces deportation.
According to Gulf News, an Arab plaintiff filed a case against the
Nigerian woman claiming that she had obtained almost Dh6,000 from
him after he met her on a social networking website.
The plaintiff told the court that the woman claimed she was an Arab
residing outside of the UAE and had $11 million (Dh40.4 million)
deposited in a finance company in the capital, adding that she could
not receive this money because the company was asking for Dh5,
730 in return.
The woman asked the plaintiff to send her the money in exchange
for 20 per cent of the deposit backing her claims with false
documents. After agreeing to the deal, the plaintiff was told to give
the money to a diplomat from the Nigerian embassy in the UAE, who
also presented a false passport.
The woman contacted the plaintiff once again, asking for another
Dh26,000, which this time caused the man to become suspicious.
After receiving a report from the plaintiff, Police arrested the woman
when she came to collect the money.
“The Judicial Department warned the public not to share personal
information with individuals from social networking sites and urged
parents to pay close attention to their children as they are more
susceptible of falling for such schemes.” Gulf news stated.
