How FEC ignored pressure to legalise gay marriage —Minister

THE Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has admitted that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) was under pressure by the international community to legalise gay marriage in the country and gave insight into how it was able to overcome the pressure.

He admitted the pressure became so intense that cabinet members had to discuss it and arrived at a conclusion that the issue of gay marriage was very unnatural and could impose psychological trauma on citizens.

Making the disclosure while hosting staff of his ministry and other associates to break Ramadan fast in his house in Abuja, the minister noted that since Nigeria is highly religious society, the FEC could not have accommodated such anti-religious practice.

He said: “When we were at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and we were discussing the issue of gay marriage, we all said that it was very unnatural.
“How can we explain this to Nigerians? That a man will go and marry a man and a woman will go and marry a fellow woman. Then we also discussed the aspect of the psychological and mental trauma that the children of such union, whether adopted or not, would have to go through.

“For example, when they go to school and they are asked, who are your parents? And they have to answer that their mummy and daddy are both men or are both female. This does not fit into a highly religious society like ours.

“There is nowhere in the world where God is worshipped like in Nigeria. Even traditional worshippers also take their religion very seriously. We pray a lot and that is why God has not forsaken Nigeria.

“We have been through situations that saw many countries into pieces, but whatever happens in Nigeria, like an elephant, Nigeria will only shake its body and move on,” he said.wp_posts
