10 new political parties may come on stream (For what? Don’t we have enough?)
Latest Politics, Party Politics Friday, August 16th, 2013AHEAD of the 2015 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has received applications from over 10 political groups to be registered as political parties.
The Commission stated that it was processing the requests, assuring registration for meritorius offers.
The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Kayode Idowu, told The Guardian on Friday in Abuja that the exercise was an ongoing process as captured in the Electoral Act.
The spokesman,who declined naming the groupings and their sponsors, said: “Registration of new political parties has been an ongoing thing in the commission. We have currently received and are processing the applications of over 10 political groups that have requested to be registered as political parties. As the commission will continue to deregister parties that have failed the requirements of the Electoral Act, it will also not hesitate to register groups that have fulfilled all the requirements for registration as political parties.
He continued: “Right now, the commission is still going through their documents and if we deem them fit to operate as political parties, they will be issued with certificates of registration”.
