Soldiers kill 70 Boko Haram members in Borno

From MOLLY KILETE. Abuja

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), yesterday announced the killing of about 70 Boko Haram members in its operation in Borno State to flush out the terrorists group in the North- East. A total of 56, terrorists, were said to have died during a military ground and air operations in the forest of Alafa, about 21 kilometers from Bama, in Borno State, while seven others died on Lake Chad Island.
Two soldiers were also said to have been injured during an intensive operation that took place over the weekend.
Director, Defence Information (DDI), Major-General Chris Olukolade, who made this known in Abuja, said the operation became necessary following an intelligence report about how the terrorists were planning to establish a new camp in the said forest.
Olukolade, while noting that the land and air operations had inflicted heavy casualty on the insurgents as indicated by the high level of their loss of men and materials, said military air and land bombardments would continue in different locations where terrorists have been reportedly sighted.
In a statement in Abuja, the Defence spokesman, told of how troops of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), successfully foiled an attempt by terrorists, who were massing up on an island on Lake Chad with a view to carrying out an attack on some Nigerian communities.
He said seven of the terrorists died in the hands of the MNJTF, while others who fled in different directions towards Niger and Chad Republic were being trailed by the soldiers.
He further said that intelligence reports have confirmed that some of the wounded terrorists were seen in a canoe paddling towards Tumbun Telkandam in Chad Republic.
