Four People Beheaded in Jos Fresh Attack

FOUR persons have been confirmed dead as a result of a pre-dawn attack in Shekan village of Bassa Local Government Council of Plateau State.

It was gathered early yesterday morning that an aged woman and her husband were beheaded and two of their grandchildren battered to death by unknown assailants, who stormed the village at about 12 midnight yesterday.

This is coming barely four days after leaders of the various ethnic groups in Plateau State met with the Governor and signed a peace treaty.

According to sources, the Shekan village, inhabited by Berom people, is a border settlement located between Jos South LGA and Bassa Local government.

State Police Commissioner Abdulrahman Akano, who confirmed the incident said, “the attack was carried out at midnight. Four people, indeed, were beheaded.”

Akano, however said: “This particular killing has nothing to do with the normal Jos crises or attacks by Fulani herdsmen. It is purely a criminal act because no cattle were rustled in the attack.

“These criminals could be said to be ritual killers because they beheaded the woman and went away with her head. We only found the headless body somewhere in the bush.”

He said, “The village is under Bassa Local government, not Jos South because when the police picked their bodies and wanted to take them to Jos south, the villagers said the community is under Bassa Local government though it is a border settlement”.

Akano appealed to the people of Bassa Local government to maintain calm and should not link the incident to attacks by Fulani. “The is an existing peace agreement between the Fulanis, Hausa and Irigwe tribes inhabiting Bassa local government that will continue to live in peace. The peace agreement was signed just last Wednesday and I don’t want the people to abandon the peace agreement because of this incident because it has nothing to do with Jos crises”

The police commissioner said, “As I am talking to you now, my men are on the trail of those criminals. We must bring them to justice for this wicked act”
