NAFDAC raids drugs markets in Kwara

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, stormed Ilorin, Kwara State capital to mop up fake drugs from the open markets, catching many unsuspecting patent medicine stores operators and pharmacy stores unaware.

The agency’s action was boosted by the latest multimillionaire world class machine technology, TRUSCAN, it recently acquired. It instantly confirms whether drugs are fake or genuine.

Artesunate, Amalar, antimalaria, Lexotan, Lonart, and some anti-biotic drugs, were found to be fake.
Aside been tested, disparities in the batch numbers were also noticed, a development that compelled NAFDAC to educate the public to be more conscious of the batch numbers of these drug before they are administered.

Deputy Director, Ports Inspection, Mrs Comfort Makanjuola, while addressing a press conference after the exercise said the agency was committed to ensuring that the public consume safe and effective drugs, stressing that nothing would be spared to achieve this target.

Towards this end, she said, more of the machines would be procured to ensure that all the drugs that are on sale across the country, including towns and remote villages, would be tested and certified okay before being administered.

She also said that the agency will soon beam its searchlight on private and public hospitals including clinics to ensure that operational standards are mainteinned and that people have asses to quality health.
