Jonathan, Sambo arrive in Jos

AHEAD of his presidential campaign in Jos, the Plateau State capital today, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday at about 6:30 p.m. arrived the Yakubu Gowon Airport, while his deputy, Nnamdi Sambo arrived the city later. They were welcomed at the airport by Governor Jonah Jang and top government officials.

Also, commercial activities in Jos were partially paralysed yesterday as the President is expected to flag-off his presidential campaign in the state this morning.

The commercial nerve centres in Jos, like the ever-busy Ahmadu Bello Way, Murtala Muhammed Way, the Terminus Area, the road leading to Massalacin Jumma and the Gbong Gwom Palace were yesterday cordoned off by stern-looking security operatives. All the shop owners and other business interests were forced to close their businesses.

A trader, John Uche, who owns one of the affected shops but hanging around, said, “this situation is very unfortunate. Yesterday (Tuesday) business was halted abruptly because of the crisis that we experienced. That one was even normal. But today, they say the President is coming and they decided to close every important place.”

But government said the action was necessary to forestall any unforeseen happening during Mr. Presidents’ arrival.
