Black Canadian senator, Don Meredith, has resigned in disgrace to avoid expulsion from the Senate for his illicit affair with a 16 year-old foreign university student he met at a church function in February of 2015 in Ottawa, the Canadian capital. The relationship which lasted for at least two years, culminated into sexual intercourse when the girl turned 18 according to the senator.
The Senate Ethics committee convicted Meredith a few weeks ago for using his position to influence the young girl and for bringing the senate into disrepute with his immoral actions. The committee recommended expulsion from the senate, but Meredith resigned one day before the senate would have voted to expel him from its chambers, a vote that would have been the first in its history. Fifty-two year-old Meredith, an ordained minister and avid advocate for the youth, is married and from the Toronto area.
