Police arrest 41 Nigeriens
Headlines Monday, March 21st, 2011
The Police in Abuja on Monday said it had arrested 41 Niger nationals in the Gwarinpa area of the city.
But unconfirmed sources put the number of the arrested men at 200.
The arrested foreigners were picked up at an uncompleted building within the area. Our correspondent gathered that the large number of people, who were said to have dressed in dirty clothes and moving in a suspicious manner, attracted the attention of a passerby.
The passerby, it was further gathered, was said to have informed the police of the discovery, while the policemen from Gwarinpa Divisional Police Area moved in to arrest the suspects.
Police sources told our correspondent that those arrested were being questioned on how they entered the country and why they were moving in large number.
It was also learnt that the Police would investigate if the foreigners’ influx had anything to do with the forthcoming general elections.
However, a police source said the arrested men were not with any arm or ammunition when they were picked up.
