COVID-19: Western countries grow suspicious of China’s role

(NNP) Suspicion is growing among European countries regarding the role of China in the ongoing pandemic. French president Emmanuel Macron has noted that China is not being candid with the world on the extent of the virus outbreak in Wuhan and its accounting of the severity of the situation to world. With the recent adjustment upwards of 50% in the number of deaths caused by the virus in China, many Western countries are overly suspicious of the information that comes from Beijing, noting that it has not been transparent with the world. It is of note that with Wuhan being the epic centre of the virus, there was no report of a single case in Beijing or Shanghai, both closer to Wuhan than Italy, Spain or New York.
In UK, the prime minister is finding it difficult to involve Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies in the country’s 5G network as opposition is mounting. The European Union has been circumspect and has called for a close review of China’s activities and its cover-up of the facts of the outbreak. The Americans have also indicated that China was not forthcoming with the true numbers of cases and casualties, a situation that has enabled the virus to defile containment measures to spread rapidly around the world.
