(NNP) Pope Benedict, the first Pope to resign in 600 years in the history of the Catholic Church, is reported to be seriously ill, according to reports from a German newspaper on Monday. The newspaper, Passauer Neue Presse, referenced the former Pope’s biographer, German author Peter Seewald, who met with the 93 year-old former Pope and stated that his voice was barely audible and that he is suffering from an ailment known as shingle, a viral infection that afflicts older people with skin rashes that cause immense discomfort.
The Vatican, however, allayed any fears of the former Pope’s health saying that he would recover from the ailment. The former history-making pontiff recently travelled out of Italy for the first time since he shocked the world with his resignation on health grounds in 2013, to visit his ailing 96 year-old brother Georg Ratzinger. Georg Ratzinger passed away on July 1. Former Pope Benedict lives in the Vatican in quarters that used to be a convent.
