Update: U.S. blocks Okonjo-Iweala’s election as Director-General for the World Trade Organization (WTO)

(NNP) Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, two-time finance minister for Nigeria was on Wednesday, recommended as the new Director-General for the World Trade Organization. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy was favoured by 104 out of the 164 member countries against her opponent from South Korea, Yoo Myunghee, a lawyer and the country’s trade minister. However, news have emerged late that the U.S. has blocked her election/recommendation and preferred the South Korean candidate. The U.S. position puts the entire process on hold as consensus is needed to finalize the process. The world body has set further discussions to seek consensus for Nov. 9.

Do we have any details as to why the US is blocking her nomination? If she’s favored by 104 countries out of 164 member countries of the body, why this roadblock by the Trump racist regime? I don’t think it takes a genius to know that Trump will favor the South Korean candidate. The question is, what can the ordinary people like us do to fight back against this injustice?
