Shekarau inaugurates transport scheme for female students

The Kano State Government, on Friday inaugurated a transport scheme for female students of public secondary schools in the state.
Governor Ibrahim Shekarau inaugurated the scheme at the Government Arabic College (Girls), Goron Dutse.
It will be managed by the Kano State Ministry of Works and Transport.
Seven luxury buses will ply designated routes within the Kano metropolis to convey the girls to and from six day schools in the domain at subsidised rates under the pilot programme.
Shekarau described the programme as a step toward consolidating the gains recorded on the free education for girls’ policy of his administration.
He stressed the importance of inexpensive transport system to the education of the girl-child, recalling that it was one of the several programmes of the state government aimed at increasing enrolment, retention and completion of girls’ education in the state.
The governor instructed the personnel saddled with the responsibility of managing the vehicles to ensure the sensible use so that the idea of introducing the scheme would stand the test of time.
He urged private investors in the transport sector to complement the effort of the government by introducing separate transport facilities for students at affordable rates.
