11 Arrested For Snatching Ballot Box in Ekiti
Ekiti, Elections 2011, State News Saturday, April 16th, 2011ELEVEN people were arrested yesterday in Ekiti State, for various electoral offences. Three of them were in possession of locally made pistol, even as early reports indicated that President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was in a clear lead.
Also, people suspected to be political thugs snatched and destroyed election materials in St Andrew School, Usi Ekiti and Oke Jeba, both in Ido Osi Local Council of the State.
The ballot boxes, which belong to Unit 5 and 8 Usi Ward, were still at Ido Police Station when reporters visited. Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and PDP were accusing each other for the crisis.
The State Police Command’s spokesperson, Mohammed Jimoh, who confirmed the arrest, said those arrested were still being investigated and they would soon be charged to court if they were found culpable.
The Coordinator of Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation in the state, Chief Femi Akinyemi, accused the supporters of the ACN for snatching the ballot boxes when they realised that their party had lost the election.
But the Special Assistant on Protocol to Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Gbenga Agbeyo, accused the PDP chieftains in the area of terrorising ACN supporters.
Though the INEC still await reports from its collation centres, some of the results gathered from the polling centres showed that Ekiti
People voted for President Jonathan.
