How Imo, Abia Got Niger Delta Status
Abia, Imo, Niger Delta, State News Saturday, April 16th, 2011The governorship candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume , Saturday said the inclusion of Imo and Abia states among Niger Delta states were his handiwork as the chairman of the South East and South South caucus of the National Assembly when he was in the Senate.
He also reassured the people of Owerri zone that he would serve for a single tenure of four years if elected the governor of Imo State, even as he submitted that among all the 18 candidates jostling to be governor of the state, he is the most experienced and qualified..
Araraume, who stated this while interacting with newsmen in Owerri, stressed that he has tremendous respect for the zoning agreement existing in the state and would abide strictly by the gentleman’s agreement.
According to him, Imo has a culture already established in the state, which states that each of the three zones, namely Orlu, Okigwe and Owerri would take a two term of eight years in a rotational formula.
He said he was instrumental to the enlistment of Imo and Abia into the Niger Delta states and brought a transmission station to Alaojii. Araraume claimed he brought NTA to Okigwe.
He said he was the Chairman Senate Committee on the Creation of States in the South-east and was also responsible for some of the cancellation of the nation’s debt as the Senate committee vice chairman on cancellation of debt.
These are no mean achievements, he stated and challenged his opponents to showcase theirs.
He pointed out that Orlu zone has taken its turn of eight years and Okigwe zone is about serving out its first four years and would complete same in 2015, when Owerri zone would take over in that order.
“During the sensitisation period, I went round the local government areas and told the people that I will rule for four years and hand over to an Owerri man, who believes in good governance, free education, healthcare delivery and infrastructural development,” he said.
According to him, four years is enough for him to achieve all he intends to achieve, stating that the former governor of old Imo State, Chief Sam Mbakwe achieved almost all his programmes within four years and this is enough time for any government that has focus and vision to touch the lives of the citizenry.
He urged the electorate to be vigilant and be prepared to protect their votes adding that the protection of votes is the responsibility of everybody
