The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were responsible for the road traffic crash involving world-renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

According to a statement signed by Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide, the fatal crash occurred on Monday around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, involving a Lexus Jeep conveying Anthony Joshua and a stationary truck.

The crash involved two vehicles: a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN (private) and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck with an unknown registration number. A total of five adult males were involved.

Two persons died in the crash, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries.

The injured victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was notified for further investigation and documentation.

The statement revealed that preliminary findings showed the Lexus Jeep was suspected to have been travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit and lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre before crashing into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

The FRSC said excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, on behalf of the management and staff of the FRSC, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery.

The Corps also reiterated its warning to motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking, excessive speed and disregard for traffic regulations, especially on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, urging drivers to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline and prioritise safety during the festive travel period.
