FG to close nation’s waterways for guber elections
Elections 2011, Governors Friday, April 22nd, 2011| The Federal Government on Thursday said it would close all the waterways in the country during next week’s governorship election until the end of the poll on Tuesday.
The government noted that its resolve to disallow movement within Nigeria’s borders during the period was to prevent foreigners from coming into the country and to ward off people with ulterior motives from disrupting the poll. The Commanding Officer, Nigeria Naval Station, Delta State, Commodore Henry Babalola, reiterated the decision of the Federal Government during its flag show to test the readiness of the navy for Tuesday’s governorship poll. Babala explained that the navy would secure election materials and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission; employ the use of helicopters to move INEC equipment to places that could not easily be accessed by the INEC official; escort INEC election boats and deploy its entire personnel to ensure a successful election. The Commanding Officer vowed to deal with those who intended to breach the peace in areas where the navy had been designated to ensure security of INEC staff and voting materials, adding that officers were ready to make their services available when called upon “upland”. He said, “The restriction of movement in the upland also applies to the waterways until voting is concluded on Tuesday. We will make sure that the order is adhered to to ensure maximum security for INEC officials and ballot materials within our jurisdiction. “We are prepared to deal with and in fact detain anyone who breaches the law during this period. The navy will also shuttle between Escravos, Delta and Forcados and we will check foreigners from coming to vote. “This time, there is no taking chances whether there will be peace. The navy will deploy more men because from our past experience, we have noticed that more people now troop out to vote.” |
