Plateau women protest arrest of 19 youth

Piqued by the arrest of 19 youths in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State by men of the Special Task Force (STF) in connection with the recent Fulani invasion of the area, women and youths of the affected council, on Thursday, staged a protest to condemn the arrest and the operations of the STF during the invasion.

Some people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen recently invaded the village of Gong’ohong, carted away their cattle and killed three inhabitants of the village. But men of the STF also claimed to have arrested 19 youths of the area over the incident.

The women and youths of the council in their hundreds, on Thursday, stormed the local government secretariat to register their complaint against the arrest of the youth and operations of the STF.

The spokesman of the group, Mr Davou Nyango, who called on the security agents to release the 19 youth, said they were unjustly arrested and labelled armed bandits.

According to him, men of the STF, who were on rescue mission, did not go after the cattle rustlers but started arresting innocent community members out to assist in tracking down the cattle rustlers who were a few kilometres from the point.

The group expressed dismay that in spite of the presence of security agents in the community, such ugly incidents could still happen and called for full investigation into the matter with the aim of bringing perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.

Responding, the local government chairman, Mr Moses Dalyop, commended the people of the council for their maturity and the peaceful way they went about the protest, adding that the council, in conjunction with the state government, would get to the root of the matter.

The chairman enjoined them to be more vigilant and watch over their community and report any suspicious moves to the law enforcement agents and assured the people that the local government would find means of alleviating their suffering.wp_posts
