Lagos: 84 Corps members evacuated from Kano & Jigawa

The Lagos State Govearnment on Monday evacuated 84 indigenes of the state, who are National Youth Service Corps members in Kano and Jigawa states.

The corps members arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, aboard an Arik Air plane, and were received by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

The corps members were among the youths stranded in the northern states as a result of the violence after the April 16 presidential election.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Culture and Home Affairs, Mr. Tunde Balogun, told journalists that the evacuation followed a distress call the government received that about 350 corps members, who were either indigenes or residents of Lagos, had been trapped in the post-election violence.

Also speaking on the development, the Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the corps members would be evacuated in two batches.

The LASEMA boss, who affirmed that the state was on top of the situation, said plans were on top gear to evacuate the remaining corp members if the situation in the North worsens.

He said, “After we were informed about crisis in Northern Nigeria, we convoked a meeting of stakeholders on how to rescue the corp members. We got a distress call from Bauchi, we quickly informed the governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, and he instructed that we go ahead to plan for the evacuation of indigenes and residents of Lagos. We linked up with the leaders and the evacuation was successful”

He added, “Everything is under control, let them remain in a safe place and we will come and evacuate them.”

Recounting their experiences, one of the corp members, who identified himself as Nonye Monday said, “Our lives were threatened by the crisis in the North, we would want government to cancel the NYSC programme if it could not guarantee the safety and security of corp members. We lost our certificates and all our property, how are we going to recover those items?”
