Taraba: Low turnout in spite of early arrival of INEC officials

Tuesday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in Taraba State was generally peaceful as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and their materials arrived polling centres at 8:00 a.m., but there was a low turnout of voters at all the polling units visited by the Nigerian Tribune.

The Nigerian Tribune’s investigation during the elections in Wukari Local Government Area of the state revealed that there was orderliness in all the polling units as a combined team of security personnel was seen working hard to maintain law and order during the exercise.

However, the general outcry in some polling units visited by the Nigerian Tribune in the area showed that a number of under-aged voters participated in the exercise, which many believed was not proper.

Also, attempts by some hoodlums to cause commotion in some areas were also thwarted following an aggressive monitoring by team of military personnel drafted from the Nigerian Army Unit in Takum Local Government Area.

Some corps members who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune at various polling units complained of indiscipline by voters who wanted to take the advantage of their personalities to jump the queue, which they, however, said they resisted.

Speaking to journalists after casting his vote at Kente village, the state House of Assembly member representing Wukari II Constituency, who is also seeking re-election, Honourable Josiah Sabo Kente, commended INEC and its team for organising the most peaceful elections in the country.

He advised Nigerians to give INEC all the supports and appealed for all to work towards maintaining law and order during election.

The lawmaker who called for calm also advised his supporters not to engage in any form of crisis that would affect the smooth conduct of the election.
