Kano: Christian NYSC members wear hijab at polling stations
Elections 2011, Kano, NNP Elections 2011 Updates, NYSC (National Youth Service Corp), State News Wednesday, April 27th, 2011MOST corps members engaged for the ongoing elections in Kano, on Tuesday, during the governorship and House of Assembly elections tactically withdrew their service from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while the few one who took courage to appear at their polling units appeared in hijab to disguise themselves.
There was a general apathy on the part of the electorate as low turnout marred the election, even as Kano State governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, admitted that there was a low turnout of voters.
It was gathered that most electorate after last presidential election in annoyance had torn their voter cards because their preferred candidate lost.
The Nigerian Tribune observed in Kano that only a few corps members turned up for the elections but did not wear their NYSC uniform, while the female among them were seen wearing hijab on their faces.
Some of the female corps members told the Nigerian Tribune that they were advised to wear the hijab to avert unnecessary attack on them.
Speaking after casting his vote at Ginginyu ward, Governor Shekarau said there was low turn out of voters.
He, however, stated that there was no report of any incidence across the state, commending INEC for doing a good job.
