‘Why female lawmaker-elects must not fail’
Africa & World Politics, Women Politics Monday, May 2nd, 2011President, African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) and wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, has said female law makers must not fail, if women are to be taken serious.
She congratulated the four women elected into the Ekiti State House of Assembly.
Three of them were elected on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), while the fourth was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
They are: Ogunlola Omowunmi (Ijero- Ekiti), Mrs Fatunbi –Olajide Julianah (Moba II), Olayinka Modupe Abeni (Ado-Ekiti II), all of ACN, and Mrs Orilowo Olubunmi Anike (Ido Osi I) of PDP.
Mrs Fayemi, in a statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Mr Olayinka Oyebode in Ado-Ekiti, she described the election of the four women into the state legislature as a sign of advancement in the political culture of the state.
Mrs Fayemi said: “Your performance in the next four years will go a long way in showing whether or not women are capable of making the desired change in government. If you do well in this assignment, it will open greater doors to you and many other women. Similarly too, if your performance is below average, it will have negative impact on future efforts by women.
“But, I am convinced that since you went through the due process of electioneering both at your respective party primaries and the actual elections, you are fully prepared for the task ahead.
“While I join other well meaning Nigerians and especially the good people of Ekiti State to congratulate you on this achievement, I want you to know that your membership of the legislature has placed an added responsibility on you, especially being part of the first set of elected female lawmakers in the state assembly.”
