Supreme Court: Jonathan submits three names to Senate for confirmation

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday sent names of three Justices of the Court of Appeal to the Senate for screening and confirmation as Justices of the Supreme Court.

Their appointments followed the retirement of Justices of the apex court, Justices G. A. Oguntade, J. O. Ogebe, Niki Tobi and I. F. Ogbuagu.
In a letter addressed to Senate President David Mark and read at the beginning of plenary, President Jonathan urged the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly to confirm the appointments of Justices N. S. Ngwuta, Mary Peter-Odili and O. Ariwoola, as Justices of the Supreme Court.

President Jonathan explained that the appointments were based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and in conformity with Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution and subject to confirmation of the appointment by the Senate.

Also, President Jonathan in another letter to Mark, equally sought the Senate’s confirmation for the appointments of Chairman and members of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The nominees include two new ones, while the remaining seven are re-appointments.
The list of the nominees include Muhammad Bello as Chairman, Adam Idoko, Fatima Oyekan, Ahmed Efebeli, Musa Isa, Ado Shinkafi and Hajia Hannatu Birma that were re-appointed as part-time members while Abdullahi Mukhtar Mohammed and Yusuf Adebayo Ibrahim were submitted to the Senate for confirmation as full-time members.
Similarly, the President has also sent the name of Lawal Inde Abdullahi from Katsina State to the Senate for confirmation as member of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocaation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
He is to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the former representative of Katsina.
