My electoral victory has vindicated Yerima – Yari

Governor-elect of Zamfara State, Alhaji Abdulazeez Abubakar Yari said his victory in the recent gubernatorial poll had vindicated Senator Sani Yerima as the undisputed political leader of the state.
Yari told journalists in Abuja that the failure of the incumbent Governor, Mahmud Shinkafi in the April 26 election was largely a consequence of the governor’s decision to do away with the legacies left behind by Yerima who was his predecessor and former boss.

He said irrespective of how people would want to interpret it, Yerima had remained his mentor and political godfather, adding that the senator was instrumental to his trumping of the incumbent Shinkafi in the election.
“Yerima remains my Godfather, whether we like it or not, he played a gigantic role in the governance of Zamfara State. So therefore whatever name you want to give it either godfather or whatever you call it, you are right,“ he said.

He expressed regrets that a good number of the vices which the Yerima administration had fought to a standstill through the introduction of the Sharia legal system had gradually returned during the Shinkafi years and said that accounted for the governor’s rejection by the people of the state at the poll. According to Yari, “my emergence as governor is rather the return of Yerima because people sympathize with him in Zamfara; till date he enjoys the people’s sympathy as the only Governor whose deputy succeeded him and in the end they had a running battle between the two of them.“

He said despite the orchestrated campaigns against Yerima by the Shinkafi administration, “whether anyone likes it or not, the ex-governor played a gigantic role in the governance of the state,“ even as said Shinkafi could only complete three out of 38 projects he initiated. “After Yerima left, some of these vices started creeping back into the system such that, today, the people of Zamfara are not happy with the present administration. I’m going to address those things according to Sharia law and do my best to eliminate those things. We are going to modernize the system according to the law of Sharia,“ he stated.

The governor-elect said his administration would give priority attention to human development, quality education, rural roads construction, jobs creation and poverty eradication and stressed the need to boots the Internally Generated Revenue base of the state to generate funds for the running of the state.
