Jonathan to launch new Abuja transportation scheme
Abuja (FCT), Latest Politics, State News Sunday, May 22nd, 2011President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to launch a new transport scheme for Abuja tomorrow in a renewed bid by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration to revamp the comatose sector.
The new scheme, which comes under Greater FCT Operators’ License Scheme, is a new plan to inject over 100 high capacity mini bus and taxi scheme to alleviate the sufferings which residents of the country’s capital pass through daily in terms of transportation in and around Abuja.
In order to achieve the feat, a total of five companies were licensed to provide the services needed to drive the scheme, which include recapitalisation and gradual replacement of rickety vehicles within 18 months, introduction of high-capacity bus services on seven bus routes and the provision of mini bus services in districts and housing estates.
Speaking to journalists, at the weekend, the FCT Secretary in charge of the Transportation Secretariat, Mr Jonathan Achara Ivoke, disclosed that the structure of the scheme, which included taxi services and taxi hire services, would be offered and operated through licensed companies, while mini bus services, which would be area based, would operate within districts, estates and satellite towns and service feeder routes of high-capacity bus routes.
