Bauchi: Cop killed as gunmen hurl bomb at police station

Barely 48 hours after the multiple bomb blasts that occurred at the 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi, killing 13 and injuring 40 others, gunmen have hurled another bomb at a police station in Bulkachuwa town of Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, killing a police corporal.

An eyewitness told Daily Sun that the gunmen fired shots at the police station before throwing explosives at the station thereby heightening tension. One policeman was listed as missing after the attack, which occurred Tuesday night, which came only days after a string of bomb blasts ripped through a crowded local beer (Burukutu) joint at the military barracks in Bauchi.

The dead body of the missing policeman, a corporal, was later found. The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Abdulkadir Indabawa, confirmed there was a bomb attack on Bulkachuwa Police Station last night by unknown attackers who also fired gunshots. Indabawa said the police station, situated some 180 kilometres North of Bauchi city, was seriously damaged. A local resident, Babandi Umar, said the attackers used explosives and gunshots when they stormed the station around 8:15pm.

“One of the two policemen inside the police station as at the time of the attack is still missing. The police station has been badly damaged; the walls are riddled with bullet holes,” said Umar. Bauchi is one of the predominantly Muslim northern states hard hit by post-election riots that left several, including serving corps members, dead in April. Police said they had no idea who the attackers were. Nobody had so far claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks.
