Labour Party Drags Obi To Court Over N360bn LG Funds
Anambra, Labour Party (LP), Party Politics, State News Saturday, June 18th, 2011THE Labour Party in Anambra State has at last made good its threat to drag Gov Peter Obi to court to account for all the cash receipts arising from the Federation Account and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and other sources from which he allegedly collected and administered monies illegally on behalf of the 21 councils of the state, since 2006 to date.
The state chairman of the party, Comrade Jude Goodluck Ezenwafor, disclosed this to newsmen in Awka at the weekend after a state executive council meeting.
He accused the governor of not doing enough to organise council election in the state.
He also accused him of tacitly discouraging the conduct of the LG election and that since 2006 he has received and solely appropriated more than N360 billion on behalf of the councils.
This and other such acts, Ezenwafor insisted, must be fully accounted for, saying it for the purpose the party went to court.
The party, according to the chairman joined the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, to reject setting up of Caretaker Committees at the councils by Gov Obi, pointing out it was an aberration under the nation’s laws and constitution.
The meeting also formally received and ratified the earlier resolution of the general house to appoint its only elected member in the current Anambra State Assembly, Chief Emeka Anohu, as the Zonal Leader of the party.
A formal letter to this effect was immediately sent to the National Chairman, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu.
Ezenwafor acknowledged what he described as the dogged fight put up by the lawmaker during the just concluded general elections, which secured him a landslide victory for Ihiala 2 State Constituency.
He said if repeated all over again, Chief Anohu would win as often. “He performed gallantly, and we want to present him to the world, Nigeria and the Anambra electorate as a specimen worthy of emulation in quality representation,” the party chairman said.
The lawmaker assured them of his commitment to the ideals of the party, but noted that his priority remains with improving the lot of the Anambra electorate that has for so long been neglected and undermined by successive administrations in the state.
He said that his top priority in the Assembly, based on verified data he collected over the years of his free medicare programme in the area, is to use his position to positively advance the health sector in the constituency, and later to other parts of the state.
