Abia Killer Cop Arraigned, Remanded in Custody
Abia, Headlines, Nigerian Police, State News Friday, September 23rd, 2011Abia State Police Command Thursday commenced prosecution of the police corporal, Umar Mohammed, who killed a fellow officer, Clement Amaechi, for some inexplicable reasons.
Mohammed was arraigned at a Magistrate Court in Umuahia, where he was charged with the killing of Amaechi by “shooting him in the heart with AK 47 rifle, which caused his death” on July 19, 2011 at Okpara Avenue, Umuahia.
In the charge No. U/473C/2811 before Chief Magistrate Maureen Ken-Ahukannah, Umar was said to have committed an office punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap C38 Laws of he Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 as application in Abia State.
After the charge was read to the accused no plea was taken as the case was deemed to be beyond the jurisdiction of the magistrate court.
However, the magistrate ordered for the accused to be remanded in custody, while the case was transferred to a court of competent jurisdiction
Before he was driven away after the court appearance, Umar, 35, who looked defiant, was noticed exchanging hot words with some police officers inside the unmarked white patrol van where he was sandwiched by armed policemen.
Both Umar and his victim were among the Government House security team before the ugly incident.
He was said to have gone berserk on the day of the incident, shooting sporadically after killing Amaechi, who was his neighbour at their Okpara Avenue residence.
Umar was on September 4, discharged from the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia where he was treated for gun shot wounds he sustained when he was demobilised.
Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Mr. Joseph Micloth, had last week, disclosed that Umar was arraigned for orderly room trial two days, after he was discharged from the hospital.
