Abuja: Police kill two robbers in gun duel

Two suspected robbers were on Tuesday killed by policemen in Abuja during a gun duel, while two others escaped with bullet wounds.
Two senior police officers also sustained serious injuries with one of them who was shot in the stomach still on admission at the National Hospital, Abuja.
The robbers, who drove in a green Toyota Camry saloon car with registration number EL 422 ABJ and a Honda car, were said to have laid a siege in front of Ceddi Plaza, Abuja waiting for unsuspecting bank customers.
Police sources told our correspondent that a neighbour alerted the police about the suspicious movement of two cars which had two occupants in each of them.
It was also gathered that one of the shot robbers, who was arraigned for armed robbery before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, was discharged for want of diligent prosecution.
This information was said to have been relayed to the Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Mr. Wilson Inaliegwu, who in turn, informed the ACP, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Mr. Rabiu Dayi.
The two officers were said to have mobilised their men from SARS and the Abuja Crime Control Squad and laid ambush for the suspects.
Inaliegwu, who confirmed the story, said that as soon as the robbers realised that their cars had been surrounded by the police who had taken strategic locations around them, opened fire on the police officers.
He said that in the process, two senior police officers with the rank of assistant superintendent of police were shot while two robbers were also shot with two of them dying on the spot.
