Akume, 24 PDP members to join ACN

Former Governor George Akume of Benue State and 24 other Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftains in the state will today, officially declare for Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Aside the decamping of Akume and others in Benue State, it was also gathered that moves were on for ACN to receive Senator Jubril Aminu and another big wig in Adamawa into the fold.

It will be recalled that Prof. Aminu lost his return bid to the Senate.

Chairman of ACN, Lagos State chapter, Otunba Henry Ajomale disclosed this, yesterday, at the party’s secretariat, Ikeja, Lagos, where Governor Babatunde Fashola flagged off the advocacy and enlightenment programme on voters’ registration exercise slated for January 15 to 29.

According to Ajomale, ACN had become the toast of many Nigerians as many have been disappointed by PDP at all levels, enjoining registered party members to accommodate the newcomers.

He said, “tomorrow (today,) former Governor George Akume of Benue State and 24 others are decamping to ACN another wind is blowing in Adamawa State, where some people are going to decamp to ACN. All these are testimonies to the fact that we are on top of good governance.”

Addressing the  crowd that included local government area party chairmen and council bosses, political aspirants, including wife of the erstwhile Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, some members of the state executive council and politicians, Governor Fashola said that though the voters’ registration exercise to be conducted by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will commence on January 15, “we lead this crusade because we want to be the torch bearer of good governance.

“We must ensure that our people, especially those above 18 years, are persuaded to register for the exercise because that is surely the only way to ensure continuity of our state and hopes. Our message is simple, every Lagosian must be registered.”

Fashola screened

Meanwhile, Fashola after leaving the event was later screened by the five-man screening committee headed by Captain Vincent Oyepata. The committee, however, gave him a clean bill of health to run for second term.

Other members of the committee were Frances Aladejobi, Florence Ogunmoyero, Mrs. Gbemisola Atanda and Ademola Sadiq (Secretary).
