Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua – One Year After

Today marks one year anniversary of the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The Katsina-born statesman was committed to good governance. He enunciated a seven point agenda that encapsulated his administration’s policy thrust including electoral reform and resolving the Niger Delta crisis.

He initiated the amnesty programme as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to youth restiveness in the Niger Delta region. That policy thrust led to the establishment of the Ministry of Niger Delta.

His commitment to the dredging of the River Niger was also remarkable.

The late President was courageous enough to admit the fact that the election that brought him to power as president was a flawed.

He thereafter set up Justice Mohammadu Uwais-led Electoral Reform Committee to put in place an electoral system that would usher in credible elections.

It is worthy of note that at his death, his vice, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, in conformity with the constitutional provision succeeded him and largely continued with his policies.

President jonathan also assured Nigrians that he would put in place an enduring legacy of credible elections where the votes of the people would count.

In demonstration of this promise, Jonathan appointed Prof. Attairu Jega as chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission to midwife the April general elections.

Of equal significance is his policy in the banking sector.  He appointed Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanus as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to continue the sanitization of the nation’s banking sector.  The late president’s emphasis on the rule of law would never be forgottenwp_posts
